The vagabond

Rhymisms
Aug 17, 2021

The other day a vagabond
asked for a dollar she desired,
but I resolved not to respond
and almost walked on by her.

After all, I give to charities,
my siblings and my mom,
so why would her asperities
persuade me to respond?

She’d take my money, purchase smokes;
perhaps her begging is a hoax –
either way, I hate to reinforce
this behavior with support.

Yet though I do my token good
with what God’s given me,
I misuse more than I should,
so am I better off than she?

If all I have is truly His,
it’s by His gifts that I live,
and who am I to e’er hold back –
even God gives good to those who ask.
