Is it normal that we claim
to own so much under our name?
We say we own a plot of land,
our tree, our house, our bread;
we say we own a thousand strands
of hair upon our head.
We say we own our body,
and what’s inside of it,
and every hour of our day
to use as we see fit!
But why is it we can wield two feet?
Who gave us roof and field and wheat?
Who gives us morning and sundown
and weaves each lock within each crown?
To claim that we possess these things
is not at all normal.
Alas, we must confess our sins,
for we are but mortal!
No matter the things we assume,
we are but caretakers
of the babe within the womb,
of time and hair and acres,
and it’s silly in heaven’s eyes
that we e’er think otherwise.
